“Stay Close, Lord” – Psalm 22:11: A Devotional Blog Post

Scripture: “Be not far from me, for trouble is near; for there is none to help.” – Psalm 22:11 (ESV)

In this verse, we hear David’s desperate cry, “Be not far from me, for trouble is near.” It’s a plea that echoes the cries of many hearts throughout time—those who feel alone, overwhelmed, and in need of God’s presence. When life throws its hardest challenges at us, it’s easy to feel isolated, as though there is no one around to lend a hand, no refuge to turn to. David, a man after God’s own heart, knew this feeling well.

But what is truly beautiful about David’s prayer here is not just the request for God’s nearness, but the unspoken acknowledgment that when all others seem to vanish, God remains.

A Cry for Presence

David’s cry for help is simple: “Be not far from me.” It’s not necessarily a request for the trouble to disappear, nor is it a demand for an immediate solution. It’s simply a longing for God’s presence. Often, in our most difficult moments, it’s not the circumstances that need to change, but the comfort of knowing that we are not alone in them.

How often do we pray for God to fix the problem when what we truly need is to feel His nearness, His comforting presence by our side? Like a child who cries out for a parent in the middle of the night, sometimes all we need is to know that someone stronger, wiser, and compassionate is close by.

For Trouble is Near

David is raw in his admission: “trouble is near.” He doesn’t sugarcoat the reality of his situation. We, too, face troubles that are very real: sickness, financial hardships, broken relationships, the weight of raising children, or simply the daily weariness that pulls at our souls. Acknowledging that trouble is near is not a sign of weakness but of courage. It’s facing the reality of our struggles while also trusting in the One who is greater than the trouble itself.

The beauty of this verse is that even though trouble is near, so is God. Trouble may seem overwhelming, but God’s presence is nearer still.

When No One Else Can Help

The final part of the verse says, “for there is none to help.” It’s a statement of David’s sense of abandonment, but it’s also a statement of faith. David realizes that in the end, even when there are no human hands to help, God is still with him.

There are moments in life when we look around and no one seems to understand our pain, our fear, or our challenges. Perhaps we’ve reached out for help, but no one is able to offer what we truly need. In those times, God is our helper. He is our refuge and strength, our very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). Even when we feel isolated, He has not left us.

Finding Comfort in God’s Nearness

As we meditate on Psalm 22:11, let’s take comfort in knowing that God hears our cries. He is not a distant God. He is the One who is close, who leans in to listen to our prayers, who walks beside us through the valleys of life.

When you feel like David, surrounded by trouble with no one to help, remember that the Lord is near to all who call on Him. Whether you’re in a season of joy or a season of trial, let this be your prayer today:

“Stay close, Lord. Be near to me when trouble is near. Let Your presence be my strength, my refuge, and my comfort.”

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are always near, even when trouble surrounds me. When I feel alone and without help, remind me of Your constant presence and faithful love. Draw close to me, Lord, and help me to trust You in every circumstance. Let me rest in the knowledge that I am never truly alone because You are always with me. Amen.

Reflection:

  • In what areas of your life are you feeling overwhelmed by trouble today?
  • How can you invite God’s presence into those areas through prayer?

Trust that in every season, whether you are on the mountaintop or in the valley, God remains near.
